  • Um e dois e três e quatro = one and two and three and four
    • Usually, the “e” corresponds to a “contra tempo.” A “contra tempo” means literally “off beat.” The “e” (“and”) is used to count an additional step and is therefore done faster than the regular pace.
    • For example, in the following count, “1 and 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, 7, 8,” “1 and 2” and “5 and 6” are done faster than the rest of the counts.
